Program Note
These three pieces for piano are miniatures in a post-Romantic idiom. Each of the miniature pieces contains distilled elements drawn from the decadent aesthetics of Romanticism, but these elements are included without nostalgia. In each, I have aimed to make apparent an intimate correlation between Romanticism and decay—through chromatic saturation, which frustrates harmonic progression; through rhythmic figures and stylistic rubato, which veil the pulse of the music and frustrate the perception of metrical relationships; and through forms which emphasize the distortion of musical ideas over time.
