About

Matthew Triplett’s music confronts problems of grief and memory with an abandon at once deeply cathartic and yet mindfully self-aware. Shaped as much by literature, critical theory, and the plastic arts as by musical influences, Triplett’s music engages broadly with problems of narrative, subjectivity, political aesthetics, and form, drawing upon a wide range of extra-musical ideas and exploring how they can be made to interact in a musical framework.
Triplett is the recipient of multiple awards, including the Ada Arens Morawetz Memorial Award in Composition (2017), the William Averitt Prize for Excellence in Composition (2015), and the Presser Foundation Undergraduate Scholar Award at Shenandoah University (2014). He received his BM in composition, Magna cum laude, from Shenandoah University and his MM in Composition and Music Theory Pedagogy from Peabody Conservatory. He has studied with William Averitt, Ruby Fulton, David T. Little, and Oscar Bettison, and has participated in masterclasses with Louis Andriessen and Christopher Rouse, among others.
